Everyone on this earth has gone through something in their life that has resulted in pain, shame, grief, sorrow, or regret. Many times it only takes one bad decision to start a downward spiral that leads to drug and/or alcohol addiction, various forms of self harm, and even homelessness.

That one bad decision, especially when repeated, leads to feelings of shame which are followed closely by overwhelming feelings of pain. Many times, this is where the vicious cycle of substance abuse starts. Shame leads to pain, and pain needs to be medicated. That self medication process leads to sorrow and regret, loss, and more shame, which leads to more pain…and pain needs to be medicated…. Before you know it, you are addicted to not only the substance (physical dependence) but also to those feelings (psychological dependence), which at times can be overwhelming. With the newest forms of drugs on the streets being more potent and addictive than ever before, this vicious cycle is very difficult to break free from on your own!

Addiction does not just affect the substance abuser, but it carries over into their family members, loved ones, friends and co-workers in a variety of ways. Sometimes loved ones get so overwhelmed themselves, that they too start exhibiting negative behaviors and start to enable the addicted person rather than help them break free from the addiction.

But there is ALWAYS hope!
